Angelababy wore this black Lanvin for H&M dress at a recent I.T. promotional event. (The I.T. fashion empire is founded by Chingmy Yau’s husband, Shen Jiawei). The nude paneled crystal necklace details are bold, but border on the costume jewelry look.
Carina Lau wore the above pink one-shoulder Lanvin for H&M dress at a Cartier event in November. Perhaps she was going for a casual flirty look, but her hair totally flopped! Carina’s hair was messy with the outgrown bangs covering her face.
The Artistic Director Alber Elbaz of Lanvin designed customized unique haute couture looks for H&M in an earlier auction. The original dresses were very similar to the dresses that Angelababy and Carina Lau wore.
Lanvin’s dresses are often bold with interesting folding of fabric draping the body. However the above Lanvin for H&M dresses that Angelababy and Carina wore sported a generous cutting that was difficult to wear. The bodice of the dresses were loose and matched with the loose-fitting skirt, were not flattering on the wearer. With Angelababy’s slim figure, the dress was too big on her. Carina’s full-figure didn’t fare well either, as the dress made her appear unnecessarily pudgy. When the models wore the dresses for the Lanvin for H&M photo shoot, the dresses were likely pinned in the back to achieve the custom fitted look.
Jayne: What do you think of Lanvin’s haute couture looks for H&M?

Carina’s dress is gorgeous! Tried it on myself, but I think I will get the purple version instead. The purple was also seen on Maggie Cheung – Link: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2010/12/03/who-wore-lanvin-for-hm-better-maggie-cheung-carina-lau-natalie-portman-and-janice-man/
And Louis Koo has also worn a suit from the same kollection – Link: http://www.nitrolicious.com/blog/2010/11/22/louis-koo-michelle-reis-rockin-lanvin-for-hm/
I bought two of the tees myself. They are super whimsical, but I think more versatile than the cocktail dresses.
Forgot to comment on Angelababy… I don’t really like the way the belt sits on her dress. And I guess, the flash made the dress look transparent? Because it doesn’t look like that in the stores. Overall, I’m not really a fan of her dress, even if Albar designed it himself.
Advo, I agree with the awkward belts on both Angelababy and Carina’s dresses.
The problem with big designer collections produced for mass retailers, such as Lanvin for H&M, Isaac Mizrahi for Target, etc. is that the big designers produce the sketches and comment on the final execution. However, it’s up to H&M to source the fabrics, assign the sewing factories etc. Overall, I am not a big fan of H&M clothing because of their fabric quality, which doesn’t wear well after a few washes. I like some of their designs, but some are quite garish and again the clothes don’t keep well.
Jayne, I actually think the belt on Carina’s dress is nice. The belt is very, very stretchy. She might have gotten a size too big – hence, the massive volume against the belt which fit to her small waist because of its elasticity. Check out some other people wearing the dress e.g. Maggie Cheung wearing the purple.
Regarding designer collaborations – I believe Alber was quite involved this time. And the clothes – while not everyone’s taste are very true to real Lanvin. They are also in really quality fabrics – many of the dresses are actually silk and the construction’s very well-made. But it is true that some of H&Ms past collaborations have been all hype, no substance.
H&Ms clothing have hits and misses. It really depends upon the individual piece. They also make clothes in quality fabrics like cashmere and silk while still at affordable prices. I feel like quality control is always an issue with high street stores – e.g. chains like Zara and Topshop have much pricier clothing but still with quality issues. Even designer collections have quality issues e.g Marc By Marc Jacobs. Even though it’s “only” a diffusion line, with the prices they charge you expect a lot more. And there is absolutely no explanation for Balmain’s prices.
Not really a fan of H&M clothes. Always too big and they don’t fit right.
I thought both dresses are hideous
I don’t like any, but Carina’s dress looks so much better than Angelababy.
both dresses are hideous looking. doesn’t matter if they are brand name. Brand Names can be extremely ugly. This is why i shop anywhere to find different pieces of clothes, bags and shoes. Some people loves only brand name items. is it worth it????
Carina looks like an 80s whore……
What’s is happend with the hair of Carina Lau????
